What is Pool Filter Sand?
Your filter traps much of the large dirt and debris that your pool experiences. Unfortunately, a lot of dirty, dust and bacteria are small and can avoid your filter. You may end up with cloudy or contaminated water. The sand in your filter is the last line of defence against dirty or cloudy water. The sand in your filter has a rough surface that contaminants get caught on while the water flows through your filter. Over time, the water erodes the sand and it becomes smooth. You won’t notice this with the naked eye though. Extensive weathering will cause your pump to slow and more contaminants will flow through your filter.

When first installing new sand, the sand will capture contaminants amazing. Over the years your filter will build up dirt and debris. Combine the gunk build with and sand weathering and your water filtration system will no longer work like new. You may notice cloudy water even with proper pool water balancing. Or you may notice your pump working hard to push water through the filters. If you notice any problems with your pool filter it may be time for a sand filter change.
